Lack of running. Winter in Buckingham is not Runner friendly.

Saturday I ended up taking Jeremy and Aaron to the museum of nature for the afternoon. I haven't been there since about 86'. What a place! So much to see and do it can easily take you a full day to tour the whole thing! Saturday night we ended up having a BBQ at Catherine's place, she made a plate full of veggies and some homemade burgers. I can't remember the last time I took in over 1500 calories during a supper. I flat out pigged out! Those burgers were so good that I had a 2nd one, of course I lost sence of everything, that I inhaled them so fast that my stomach didn't have time to tell my brain that it was full! Dessert was amazing as well, freash and hot out of the oven low fat brownies with some ice cream!! Catherine came down with some presents to celebrate valentines day, yes I got some chocolate!! I think I ate around 3000 calories inbetween 6pm and 8pm.. I felt like a beached whale back at my old weight of 210lbs. Whatever right? As I told my buddy Kevin you have to eat "junk" once in awhile. So that was my big cheat day for the month!! That's the beauty of being at my ideal weight and having Control over what goes in my mouth. I don't crave junk as much as I used too! During the week I made up for it by eating alot of healthy things like garden salade, green beans, corn niblets etc..

My exercise during the week was very limited, so I did some EA Tuesday night and burnt off around 100 calories.  There is a problem with the stats so I won't be doing EA until my calander says I have a free day which is the 2nd week of March.   This was my week with Jeremy so we played about an hour and a half of out door hockey on the 14th. It was fun and Jeremy had a blast!!!

Tomorrow is another day, well it's my CDO. So my plan is to drop off Jeremy at school and go for a short 5km run around 7:30-8am and then head up to Catherines and spend the day shopping with her. So I'll be burining tons of calories walking around those out door malls!  I really need to get a treadmill so I can exercise all the time during the winter and when I have Jeremy. I have been keeping my eye open for one at Costco that never goes on sale! This thing can keep up too my demands as a runner. Here are the stats,  The ifit sysyem is incredible! You hook up your laptop to the treadmill and punch in a route anywhere in the world using google maps and the treadmill will adjust to the inclines of the route, how amazing is that????

20 in. x 60 in. quiet treadbelt
2.5 CHP Mach Z™ commercial drive motor
0 – 19 km/h (0 – 12 mph) QuickSpeed™ control
0% to 10% QuickStep™ Incline™ control
Grafixx™ LCD display
10 performance workouts
6 weight-loss workouts
iFit® Live (requires iFit® Live module, sold separately)
Intermix Acoustic™ 2.0 sound system via an audio cable (included)
MP3 and iPod®* compatible audio
ProShox™ cushioning
Hand grip EKG™ heart rate monitor
147.4 kg (325 lb.) weight capacity

So basically I think I'll save some money everyweek and eventually buy this treadmill just before winter. That way I'll be set up to run anytime I like.

I can't remember if I talked about this in my last post but my week at the Chateau Laurier I suffered my first sports injury from running. I did some research yesterday on my black toenail, yup it's from Running, The cause old running shoes and friction in the socks causing your toenail to lift off of the skin ever so slightly to cause a blood blister. Well my shoes I was running in were a year old, less then 500km's on them so it's time to look for another pair tomorrow with the upcoming running season around the corner!

10K run for Ottawa Race weekend in May, the Spartan Run in July check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGij4JkEiKU&feature=related , and potentially a half marathon for the army run in September. These are the ones that I have slated for the 2011 season with possibly more to come!!

I'm a month away from my one year anniversary of being at my ideal "Normal weght and BMI of 158lbs.. Right now I am under that, so I must be doing something right along the lines of food and exercise.

Have a great weekend everyone!

It's good to be back home!!

This week was rough, and I mean rough!   I started out Sunday by getting all my stuff ready for our Admin Conference at the Chateau Laurier. The event was 4 days and 3 nights at the hotel.  In the past I could have gotten away with one suit case, this trip was 4 bags total.  My main suitcase had all of my clothes and an extra coat with snow pants etc..  After all I was going to be 2 minutes away from the Rideau Canal and Winterlude. My 2nd suitcase consisted of my food and drinks..   I had no idea what to pack as we don't have a stove or microwave in our rooms.   I had cereal, milk, oatmeal, granola bars and some junk, yes JUNK!  I had a bag of sun chips, 2 monster energy drinks, a 26er of spiced rum, a 2 litre of diet Pepsi, and some coke zero's.  My 3rd bag was my goodie bag, Ipod arm band, ear buds, 2 pairs of runners, shorts and a t-shirt, so basically my running gear, why not the hotel has a gym.

Monday was a short day at work 9:45am to 3pm, check in at the hotel was 3:30pm. During the day at work we were getting the garage storage ready for a clean up and disposal.  Marc, Ben and myself brought some printers into the storage. On the way back we were all kinda excited about going to the hotel. So of course I start acting like a little kid...  On the way back from the garage to the basement is a ramp that goes down..  Ramp Sloped Down + Cart = Tony on the cart going down...  That was fun until my front left tire blew out and pulled my cart into the wall or should I say steel railing.  The only problem is that my left knee connected with the railing. It hurt like a SOB.  I walked it off and it was fine, so I thought... During the conference if I kept my leg in the same position for an extended amount of time it felt like my knee was frozen like that, as soon as I moved it, I was in some pain. If I got up too go walk, I was walking with a limp.

So off too the hotel we go!

It's amazing how limited you are when it comes to being in a hotel that charges you $9 for a bottle of water and $33 for a plain old breakfast.   The only good thing that we had was the Rideau Centre was a 4 minute walk. We had an hour and a half for lunch so allot of us ended up going there. The first day wasn't too bad, I had a 12" Veg sub from subway. I felt like being adventurous and got the combo with a soft drink and the chocolate chunk cookies. On the 2nd day I hit A and W,  teen burger with a A and W root beer and fries,, Roughly 1000 calorie meal :(   On the way back I stopped in at the LCBO to pick up some more rum as I almost didn't have any left in my other bottle.  As soon as 5pm hit when our workshops finished, some co-workers started to call me and text me with the same thing "Hey man where are you? It's miller time"  I went to my room and debated on running with my sore knee, so I got undressed, threw on my running gear and went down too the gym in the hotel. Not too shabby, they had 4 treadmills with TVs built on them.  I hopped on the treadmill and started walking to warm up for about 3 minutes once that was done I brought up my speed to about 8km an hour. Bang bang bang, WTF?  I thought the treadmill was going to break... Forget this, So I proceed to another treadmill, turn it on and go to turn on the TV.... broken...  Alright time to hit treadmill #3 this was the last one as the 4th one was being used.. Get on, turn on the TV and set the speed to around 9km/h. This one was banging when I would land..  I'm like "Oh my god, what the hell is wrong with these things?  These are the same treadmills as the gym in Buckingham have and feel like I'm running on something that's going to split in two!"  I moved back abit on the actual belt and the banging went down a few decibels.. Thank god.  27:30 and I was done my 5km, Just over 300 calories burnt.

Once I got back to my room, I took off my shoes and noticed the my middle toe on my right foot was black. I had no clue what happened?   I told my friend Julie about it and she said that maybe my runners are getting too small from wear and tear.  3 days later and my toe nail is coming back to it's color. Next time I go for a run, I'll use my other shoes and see if anything happens. If it does happen again, I'll take my girlfriends advice and go get it checked out.

So I'm back home after a 12,000 calories 4 days at the hotel... I am so glad that I don't travel all the time, I'd be back at 210lbs in no time.  One of the downfalls of hotels is that you are very limited on your food, it so out of your control and you have to make the right decisions and try to eat healthy.

I finally made it home and wow did I ever miss my bed! Even though I slept in it alone, I was still looking forward too it!!  Friday night I picked up Jeremy from School and we hit Canadian tire for a socket set and then Metro and Maxi for some groceries. It felt good knowing that I had healthy food at the end of my fingertips!!   I think everything is back on schedule and I can get back to my healthy eating. Last night Jeremy and I had 3 chicken fingers each with some corn and green beans.. After we ate that, I didn't eat for the rest of the night, I weighed myself this morning and my hotel stay cost me around 4lbs of weight gain... 4lbs in a few days is ridiculous, but it can happen!!  Today Jeremy, Aaron and myself are going up to the nature museum in Ottawa to see the dinosaurs, and then it will be off too Catherine's for some yummy food!! Maybe I'll sneak a run on her treadmill while I'm there. I think I'll have enough exercise walking around the museum.

Another week has come and gone and I can't believe valentines day is in a few days!!  Enjoy your weekend folks and get those exercise minutes logged!

Febuary means a new month!!

I had a scare the last little while. I don't know if it was from really not watching what I ate. My weight was slowly going up just after Christmas, at one point I had hit 165lbs that's 10 lbs more then I wanted to be. What people have to understand is, when you are over weight and loose that weight, it is very easy to put it back on.  I work with someone that lost allot of weight and went back to the old ways and gained around 100lbs in 6 months. In my case I think in the end it was a combination of eating like crap and not running like I did in the summer.  While I ran in the summer I could burn anywhere from 300-500 calories in one run. By burning these calories it gave me more room to eat more in my day, and enjoy "crap" like ice cream or chips. Also when you run or exercise frequently your metabolism is always running so it is easier to burn off calories even when sleeping.  If you train for a marathon you can almost consume over 3000 calories a day and not gain weight. It's amazing what your body can do when you tweak it, it's like a new electronic toy and it takes you forever too find out what it can do. That's basically what happened with me, it took me 31 years to find out how my body works.

I took control of weight once again and watched what I ate, got some exercise in and finally this morning Feb 5th 2011. I am back to my weight, well actually 153.8lbs.

I started to realize how easy it is too loose control and eat whatever and figure everything is alright. This was in the span of a month and I had gained around 10lbs..  in less then 6 months at this rate I'd be back at 210lbs.

This week started off great my weight was coming down to where I wanted it to be, lots of calorie counting and exercise :)  Ea sports Active 2 came in handy and I am still using it.   Friday was a beautiful day and could not skip the chance of hitting the slopes, so I went to Cascades for a few hours and skied alone.  It was refreshing and great, at the same time I could collect my thoughts as I am going through some things in my life right now that is fogging my mind per say, nothing like the great outdoors to burn off some calories in the meantime. Back when I was overweight and I ran into problems I would go out too a bar and drink my face off.  I guess this is part of the maturing and growing up part in life.  This morning (Feb 5th) I woke up late 8:30am, it felt good too sleep in and not be hung over like in the past. I fired up my laptop at 8:40am after I weighed myself and got ahold of my sister,  I sent her a post asking her if she was up for hitting the gym. Once again back in the day I would call some one too see if they were up for some drinking in the afternoon. Those days are gone, so we took off at 10:45am to the local Gym across town.  Karrie hopped on the treadmill, and I was right beside her on another treadmill. I was more or less doing sets, I would run for a few minutes and walk for a few minutes. By the time I got off after 75 minutes, I had done over 10k, and was over 700 calories burnt. Too cool down I did 20 minutes on a recumbent bike, not too bad 90 calories burnt. So two hours of exercise yielded me around 800 calories extra in my day..  Imagine a big mac and small fry is over 900 calories, as I said before 5 minutes to eat it, 2 hours to burn it off, unless you run at 16 km an hour for an hour then you would be over 1000 calories burnt.  Puts food into perspective really.

I've been sharing my information about my weight loss and some people have asked me too help them with trying to loose weight. This week I talked to a few people in my club that I am in on the PS3.  We give each tips and tricks to help loose weight, and share our progress as the days go on. I can honestly say that it makes me happy that people can come to me and look for advice on this issue. Obesity is a huge issue and some people ignore it, it can lead too so many disease's and even death. You have one chance at life and are ready to give up your life for food?

My next step in my journey is too tone up, I have some flab that I actually hate around my stomach and neck. P90x is going too be part of my DVD library soon. Untill then, thanks for reading.
